SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

 

VOLUNTEER CENTER OF SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

Minimum age: None

Volunteer Opportunities:  The Volunteer Center is in need of "Harvest Hero" volunteers. Volunteers will harvest fruit from ripe fruit trees. Once the fruit is harvested it will be donated to a local food pantry. Have fun while helping the Volunteer Center harvest fruit for those in need in our communities.

 

Volunteers are needed to canvas the cities of Monrovia and San Gabriel in search of residents interested in contributing to the Community Harvest Program. This is a teen volunteer opportunity and can be completed when your schedule allows.

 

Volunteers are needed to create greeting cards and decorate lunch bags for our Meals on Wheels clients and drivers. This is a wonderful opportunity for younger volunteers.

 

Volunteers are needed to decorate and distribute food packs for families in Monrovia.  This is a volunteer opportunity that can be done anytime and perfect for busy teens.

 

Volunteers are needed for various community projects on the following National Days of Service:  Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January, Cesar Chavez Day in March, Global Youth Service Day in Aril, 9/11 Service Day in September, and Make a Difference Day  October 16th.  Join other VOLUTEENS as they make a difference!

 

High school age volunteers are needed to join the VOLUNTEEN Youth Council.  The Youth Volunteer Coordinator will be selecting from the group of applicants three students from each local high school.  The Council will meet once a month to plan VOLUNTEEN projects and National Days of Service.  By becoming a council member, you are given a competitive edge when applying for college or employment later on in life. You also meet and work with students from different schools in the San Gabriel Valley, learn and practice marketing and leadership skills, and become knowledgeable of the needs of your community as well as how to address them.

 

ARCADIA

 

ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY

Minimum age: 13

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to monitor and oversee signing patrons in and out of the Library's three study rooms.  The study room monitor must be reliable, responsible, polite, able and willing to take direction, enjoys working with the public, and has a strong aptitude for detail.  The position involves long stretches of down time, so it is ideal for students who have a heavy homework load. 

 

Volunteers are also needed to assist the Public Computer Aides in variety of computer-related tasks.  Basic tasks include but not limited to the following:  -Monitor the Internet, Learning Stations, Word Processing and Catalog Stations.  -Assist with making reservations at Reservation Kiosk to schedule a station.  -Assist patrons who have questions or problems with logging in to a station.  -Assist patron who have questions or problems with printing.  -Notify the Public Computer Aide or Desk Librarian if a station is not working properly.  If you are reliable, punctual, friendly, and enthusiastic and enjoy interacting with the public then this is for you.  You will work with Seniors, Adults, Teens and children.  You will have the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life.

 

Volunteers are needed to help organize and keep things tidy at the Arcadia Public Library.  Anyone who is appreciates books and neatness would be ideal for this opportunity.  Days and times vary between the regular school year and summer months. 

 

Volunteers are needed to assist with the BARKS and BOOKS program by setting up books and activity center, assist with signups, maintain order and crowd control, careful attention to detail, keeping track of those children that have already read aloud to Bernie and those still waiting for a turn, keeping and recording the number of people in attendance.  Must have good people skills and are reliable, punctual, friendly, enthusiastic and creative.  They are comfortable working with adults, children and dogs, attention to detail and comfortable speaking up and maintaining order is important.  You have the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life.  To assist with these events, it is preferable if you are able to lift, bend, and squat.

 

Volunteers are needed to assist with the children’s program in the Children's Room.  This opportunity is ideal for students who love to work with younger children.

 

Volunteers are needed to assist the library patron when using the self checkout machine.  Other responsibilities involve answering general questions, assisting within the circulation Department and performing general office work. This is the perfect volunteer opportunity for anyone who enjoys working at high pace and interacting with all types of people and technology.

 

ARCADIA NATIONAL LITTLE LEAGUE

Minimum age: 14

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are always needed to work the snack shack, score keeping during BASEBALL starting at the end of February 2011.  Possible field maintenance will be done before season start (TBD) also (TBD) FALL BALL in SEPTEMBER 2010.

 

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST FIRE LOOKOUT ASSOCIATION

Minimum age: 16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Fire Lookout Volunteers are needed Monday thru Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Training is required.

Volunteer Opportunities:  Food Packer volunteers are responsible for separating and packing all food, including canned, meats, produce, drinks and breads at Canyon Christian Fellowship.  Arrange the different bags (paper and color-coded plastic) ready to be filled with food.  To ensure we serve as many people as possible, it is imperative to separate and divide food correctly.  When food is ready to be placed in bags, food packers pack the food and make sure all bags are ready to give to clients.

 

BALDWIN PARK

BALDWIN PARK ANIMAL SHELTER

Minimum age: 16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to:  exercise shelter dogs, help feed the animals, greet visitors to the Animal Shelter, bathe/groom animals, clean cages, perform light office duties, and answering telephone calls.  If a volunteer is a minor 16-17, parental permission is required.  Volunteers are representatives of the County of Los Angeles Dept of Animal Care & Control.  There are guidelines that must be followed in order to maintain the standards of the shelter and to provide you with an enjoyable and fulfilling volunteer experience.  A three hour orientation and safe animal handling training must be completed prior to becoming a volunteer.

 

MARGARET HEATH SCHOOL

Minimum age: 16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help do some maintenance and rejuvenate the School grounds and building during the summer, July 1-August 20.

 

CLAREMONT

 

COUNTRY VILLA CLAREMONT

Minimum age:   16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help assist the staff with games, arts and crafts and other senior activities.  If you have a creative side and love to play games and have the patience to deal with older adults, then this is a good volunteer opportunity for you.

 

AMERICAN RED CROSS, CLAREMONT CHAPTER

Minimum age:   12

Volunteer Opportunities:  The Summer Youth Programs has many summer volunteering opportunities starting June 21st 2010 to August 11, 2010.  Volunteer sites include:  Ability First, volunteers assisting staff in spending time with handicapped children and adults (volunteers wishing to work at this site must be accompanied by an adult); Summer School tutoring at the Claremont Schools assisting teachers and help students with work;  City Swim aide assisting lifeguards with swim lessons; Senior Programs assist in interacting with elderly at a variety of assisted living centers; Claremont Public Library assisting with summer reading programs; Chapter Office assisting office in answering phones, photo copying and other basic office duties. Any one wishing to volunteer at the Claremont Schools must have a student evaluation form filled out by a school administrator.

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed in the areas of fundraising, clerical, bulk mailing, and special events.

 

CORY’S KITCHEN FOOD PANTRY

Minimum age: 12

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed for the Heart of Grub event on August 28-29, 2010 from 10am to 6pm.  Heart of Grub (HoG) is a free event offering a weekend to get your GRUB ON while you help STOP HUNGER for families throughout Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley.  HoG provides opportunities for guest to sample Southern California restaurant's greatest foods at an even greater value!  Entertainment includes motorcycle, BMX, and skateboard stunts shows as well as full schedule of musical performances.  Come volunteer your time in a variety of ways.


DUARTE

 

DUARTE’S PROMISE

Minimum age:  16

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers residing in the City of Duarte are needed for the People Helping People program.  The program helps seniors in the Duarte area with basic needs.

 

FOOTHILL PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER

Minimum age:  12

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to:  help organize baby clothes drives, baby bottle and diaper drives, assist in mailings and clerical duties.

 

MARYVALE

Minimum age:   16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are also needed for The Day Care program to support staff of the Rosemead and Duarte Day Care facilities.  The ages of the children the volunteers spent time with run from infant to 10 years of age.  This opportunity is needed all year long at least 2 hours a week.  (TB test all required before can volunteer.)

 

EL MONTE

 

BEAGLES & BUDDIES

Minimum age:   13

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to assist with:  doggie wrangling, poop scooping, doggie brushing, doggie walking, kennel cleaning, replacing bedding, sign making, dispatching, and doggie pad making.  All volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.  All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent accompany them to volunteer orientation.

 

IRWINDALE

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help clean up the warehouse on various days and times.

Need someone who would be interested in assisting the driver when picking up food from the local FRESH N EASY AND TRADER JOES and other local super markets to load them and unload them on to the truck and bringing it to the food pantry.  Drivers assistants are needed from 5:30am until work is all completed.  16 years of age and up are welcome.

 

LA PUENTE

 

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY FOUNDATION FOR DENTAL HEALTH

Minimum age:   16

Volunteer Opportunities: There are many opportunities for individuals and groups at events, health fairs and at the clinic.  Projects for volunteering include: assisting in the dental clinic, teaching children about oral health and nutrition, educating the community, and helping with special events.

 

LA VERNE

 

POMONA VALLEY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Minimum age:   14

Volunteer Opportunities: The Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity is in need of volunteers to assist Gina The Faith Relations Coordinator with Prayer Breakfast scheduled in August 2010; Research addresses of those on the invitation list; Attend Prayer Breakfast planning meetings; Help with the setup and clean up. Ages 14 and up are welcome to volunteer.

 

The Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity is in need of volunteers to assist in film a HabiTour in July and or August; Edit film and create a finished project; Upload film on social networking sites. HabiTours take place on Saturdays and film can be edited in the office using Window Movie Maker on Mondays-Fridays. This  opportunity is for a creative and artsy volunteer. Ages 14 and up are welcome to volunteer.

 

The Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity is in need of volunteers to assist in research young professional networks and major businesses/corporations in the 16 cities in which PVHFH serves; Develop relationships with these young professional networks and major businesses/corporation; Produce a portfolio uniquely describing the Habitat Young professionals Network Task is for a volunteer who is a self starter and feels comfortable making phone calls/communicating face to face. Ages 17 and up are welcome to volunteer.

 

LOS ANGELES

 

THE SABAN FREE CLINIC

Minimum age:   15

Volunteer Opportunities:  The Saban Free Clinic needs kid loving volunteers to read to children as they wait in the waiting room for either their own appointment or for a family member's appointment.  Reading to the children will create a positive reading experiences for children.  Volunteers must need and enjoy reading aloud and techniques that show parents that reading with children is an enjoyable process.  Volunteers also need to gather appropriate donated books and also develop displays of short poems, stories and laminated posters to display in the waiting area.

 

The Sabina Free Clinic needs volunteer translations between staff and clients in the clinic setting as well as other areas as needed.  Help translate between staff and clients, help clients who speak little or no English with various needs in the clinic setting.  Assisting supervisor with other duties as needed.

 

The Sabina Free Clinic needs volunteers to assist in the organization of clinical records and numerical filing system.  When needed, volunteers will also update and purge charts/records, file laboratory results and any other related documents into patient charts in an accurate manner.  Maintain filing system in an efficient/organized manner to facilitate easy retrieval of charts and documents.  Volunteers will review patient;’ charts to assure documentation is properly filed.  Follow up patient charts for daily clinic sessions.  Volunteers will also perform general clerical duties, including typing labels for patient charts.  Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and other volunteers.

 

Event Volunteers are needed to set up the volunteer tent, set up  beverage & restaurant load in, registration, greeting, assists with beverage and restaurant service, raffle tickets, silent auction, mystics' area and breakdown.  Volunteers are needed for the 11am to 3pm shift ***Volunteer orientation on Sunday July 11th 2010 at 10am.  This is orientation is MANDATORY orientation

 

MONROVIA

 

MONROVIA COMMUNITY SERVICES YOUTH COMMISSION

Minimum age:   12

Volunteer Opportunities:  Are you interested in being the voice of Monrovia's youth?  Would you like to be involved in future community events?  Do you like to spend time with your friends from school or make new ones?  Then join the Monrovia Youth Commission.  The Commissioners represent students from Clifton and Santa Fe Middle Schools, Monrovia and Canyon High Schools and local private schools.

 

MONROVIA ASSOCIATION OF FINE ARTS

Minimum age:   15

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed for selection committees, Board members, Event committees, event set-up, website management, advertisement and after school programs. Events:  three art walks per year, spring fund raiser, fall art festival.

 

MONROVIA PUBLIC LIBRARY LITERACY SERVICES

Minimum age:   16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Many public library patrons lack basic computer skills. The library provides many services to enrich the community ranging from book check-out on virtually any subject to music CDs to programs that encourage and promote life-long learning. One of our most important resources is a computer center that is open to the public and basic technology classes. Requirements:  1. Commit to at least 1 year as a  volunteer, with a flexible schedule.    2. Learn where the general sections of the library are and where programs are held. Training will be provided by library staff.    3. Assist patrons who need help signing on to computers and printing.    4. Assist patrons with specific problems they are having with our computers or software; volunteers help with basic questions but do not provide extended technology training.    5. Computer Class assistants help with setting up and cleaning up the Community Room.    6. Computer Class assistants help students under the direction of the instructor.

 

The Monrovia Public Library has an active Summer Reading Club for people of all ages, where patrons earn prizes for reading. For homebound seniors, coming to the Library to get books or prizes is not an option. We would like to send a volunteer to a local assisted living facility to read aloud to the seniors, give out raffle tickets and deliver any prizes won by the seniors. Volunteers will go to the retirement community once a week with a fixed schedule to read. The schedule is still to be determined, so at this point is open to the schedule of the volunteer.

 

Skills Reading Aloud: Volunteers must feel comfortable reading aloud and bringing a basic level of theatricality to their reading.  Comfortable with Seniors: The volunteers will read to a variety of seniors, some in excellent physical and mental shape, others less. The volunteer must feel comfortable working with a variety of capacity levels of seniors.  Requirements Read once a week to seniors in a retirement community / assisted living facility.  Assist Library staff in choosing books to read.  Gather raffle tickets from seniors and deliver to Library.  Deliver any prizes that seniors may have won to retirement community.

 

BOYS’ & GIRLS’ CLUB OF THE FOOTHILLS

Minimum age:   14

Volunteer Opportunities:  If you want the skills to get a job and have fun at the same times, come over to the Boys & Girls Club of The Foothills and participate in Fall  program starting after September 1, 2010. 

 

FOOTHILL UNITY CENTER

Minimum age:   Various

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are always needed to package and hand-out food.

 

Volunteers are also needed to assist with sales, sorting, organizing, marketing or donating gently used or new items.  15 years of age and older are welcome to volunteer.

 

Volunteers are needed for preparation for August 2010 distribution event for the distribution of school supply collection and donations.  13 years of age and older are welcome to volunteer.

 

Holiday volunteers are needed on Wednesday and Thursdays on December 27-28, 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm.  12 years of age and older are welcome to volunteer. 

 

MONROVIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Minimum age:   15

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to:  greet visitors, answer questions, help visitors locate information, handle gift shop sales, accept donations, and complete paperwork as necessary.

 

SANTA ANITA FAMILY YMCA

Minimum age:   15

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to coach a basketball team one hour a week on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Friday and attend games on Saturdays at the Santa Anita Family YMCA.  No experience necessary, volunteers will be trained.


MONROVIA CANYON PARK

Minimum age:   16

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to serve as hosts at Monrovia Canyon Park.  All volunteers must complete a City application, background check and TB test.  All volunteers receive a Monrovia Canyon Park shirt to wear when volunteering.

 

CANYON EARLY LEARNING CENTER

Minimum age:   12

Volunteer Opportunities:   Volunteers needed to sand the classroom furniture during the summer when students are not present at the Canyon Early Learning Center in Monrovia.  All Volunteers must complete an application and be approved before volunteering. 

 

FAMILY SUCCESS BY DESIGN

Minimum age:   12

Volunteer Opportunities:  :   Volunteers are needed for the 2nd Annual Black and Brown Young Men's Conference in Los Angeles.  Young Men ages 12-17 years of age are welcome Saturday, July 31, 2010 8:30am to 4:00pm

 

 UPWARD BOUND STUDY CENTER

Minimum age:   17

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed for Upward Bound Study Center that serves low income new Chinese immigrants in the West San Gabriel Valley.  The After School Program will offer a six week summer program (June 28 - August 6) that helps teenagers learn ESL, math and science.  The program mainly relies on Christian volunteer work. two ESL teachers and one math teacher are needed.  The job duty is to teach two ESL classes or one math class from Monday to Thursday between 2-5pm (ESL classes from 2-4pm and math class from 4-5pm).

 

MONTEBELLO

 

MONTEBELLO HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

Minimum age:   14

Volunteer Opportunities:  The Montebello Housing Development Corp is in need of Administrative/Clerical Volunteers.  The volunteer will answer incoming calls, maintain filing system, assist with day to day filing, make copies, send faxes and other clerical duties.  Volunteers are needed 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

 

AYSO REGION MONTEBELLO

Minimum age:   12

Volunteer Opportunities:  VIP Buddy volunteers are needed to guide the VIP players with physical or mental disabilities on the soccer field. VIP Buddies encourage the VIP player verbally, while treating the VIP players respectfully. Buddies also work with the coach to determine the use of the buddy on the field for a particular
individual or situation. The volunteer may start full-time on the field, progress to
fewer than four quarters and then progress to cheering from the sidelines. The role of the volunteer is to be a consistent cheerleader, throughout the season as dictated by
the player’s progress; and they work toward the goal of player independence. 12 years of age and up are welcome to volunteer

 

FINDING HOPE OF MONTEBELLO

Minimum age:   15

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to serve beverages to the homeless in the Los Angeles Skid Row area.  Volunteers will meet at Praise chapel in Montebello and be transported to location.  Volunteer are also needed to assist families with light yard work and cleaning

neighborhood parks, and local street maintenance.


MONTEREY PARK

 

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF WEST SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

Minimum age:   15

Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help assist staff in all recreation activities during the summer program as well as assist staff serving lunch to kids during the summer lunch program.

Volunteers are needed to help with our Homework Assistance program to assist youth after school after SEPTEMBER 1st 2010.  For just a few hours a week, you can not only help children with their homework and education, but make a difference, establish a bond, and experience one of the most rewarding feelings by touching the life of a child.  Volunteers MUST complete a thorough volunteer application process, an orientation, and serve a total of 8 hours.
